Day 7: "May we (the Church) be one, as you are one, so that the world will know that you love us just as much as you love Jesus."

The Lord’s Prayer

“‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be holy, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Prompt

Before Jesus is betrayed, arrested, tried, and crucified—he prays. ““I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

This is not a prayer of wish…Jesus doesn’t wish that one day we’ll be united. It’s a prayer of promise, we will be united as one, just as He and the Father are one. Over the last 6 days, we’ve prayed the prayer Jesus taught. And the prayer He taught is ultimately for our focus to be on God—his holiness, kingdom, will, provision, forgiveness, and deliverance. This world, our sin, our theology, our flesh, the enemy pulls us away from where our focus should be. And because of that, the church (worldwide) which should be united and a hospital, has become divided and in many ways abusive. The church is not the building we attend on Sundays, the mega-church, the old church, or any other ways we point the finger—we are the church. We are the body of Christ, the living stones, the priesthood of saints, the bride of Jesus. May the garden prayer of Jesus be our prayer as the church.

Prayer

Lord, I am not praying for just the church today, but for the church of the future that believe in you. May we be one, just as you and the Father are one. May we be formed in your likeness, in your character, in your love, in your mercy, in your grace, in your justice, so that the world will believe You are the Sent One, the Messiah, the Deliverer, the Son of God who rescues, restores, and redeems us.

Search me, God, and reveal to me anything that is not of you, that divides me from you or your people. Take my experiences, fears, perceptions, and presuppositions and give me new eyes, ears, and a heart to know you more. May my love for my neighbors, enemies, and siblings be a witness of your love for me and my love for you. Draw me closer to your Church as you draw me closer to You, Lord.

Reflect

Consider the things you’ve let come between you and your brothers and sisters in Christ. Think about how your experiences, fears, perception, and presuppositions have shaped your definitions and beliefs on the values and things of Jesus. How have you let these (your experiences, fears, perceptions, presuppositions) be a cause of division. How is the Spirit calling you into being united with Jesus, His kingdom, the Church?
